model 4 find nth average from 1st & last number Practice Questions Answers Test with Solutions & More Shortcuts

Question : 16 [SSC CGL Tier-II 2015]

The average of the largest and smallest 3 digit numbers formed by 0, 2 and 4 would be

a) 213

b) 303

c) 222

d) 312

Answer: (d)

Largest 3–digit number formed by 0, 2 and 4 = 420 Smallest number of three digits = 204

∴ Required average

= ${420+204}/2$ = $624/2$ = 312

Question : 17 [SSC CHSL DEO & LDC 2012]

The mean of 11 numbers is 35. If the mean of first 6 numbers is 32 and that of the last 6 numbers is 37, find the sixth number.

a) 29

b) 27

c) 30

d) 28

Answer: (a)

Using Rule 1,

Average of two or more numbers/quantities is called the mean of these numbers, which is given by

$\text"Average(A)" = \text"Sum of observation / quantities"/\text"No of observation / quantities"$

∴ S = A × n

Sixth number

= 6 × 32 + 6 × 37 – 11 × 35

= 192 + 222 – 385 = 29

Question : 18 [SSC CGL Tier-I 2013]

Out of four numbers, the average of the first three is 15 and that of the last three is 16. If the last number is 19, the first is

a) 15

b) 18

c) 16

d) 19

Answer: (c)

Using Rule 1,

a + b + c = 45 and

b + c + d = 48

⇒ b + c = 48 – 19 = 29

∴ a + b + c = 45

⇒ a = 45 – 29 = 16

Question : 19 [SSC CGL 2007]

Out of seven given numbers, the average of the first four numbers is 4 and that of the last four numbers is also 4. If the average of all the seven numbers is 3, fourth number is

a) 4

b) 11

c) 7

d) 3

Answer: (b)

Using Rule 1,

Average of two or more numbers/quantities is called the mean of these numbers, which is given by

$\text"Average(A)" = \text"Sumof observation / quantities"/\text"No of observation / quantities"$

∴ S = A × n

Fourth number

= (4×4+4×4 – 3×7)

= (16 +16-21) = 11

Question : 20 [SSC Constable 2012]

Out of four numbers, the average of the first three is 18 and that of the last three is 16. If the last number is 19, the first is

a) 18

b) 25

c) 20

d) 19

Answer: (b)

Using Rule 1,

Average of two or more numbers/quantities is called the mean of these numbers, which is given by

$\text"Average(A)" = \text"Sumof observation / quantities"/\text"No of observation / quantities"$

∴ S = A × n

a + b + c = 18 × 3 = 54

and, b + c + d = 16 × 3 = 48

∴ a + b + c – b – c – d

⇒ 54 – 48 = 6

⇒ a – d = 6

⇒ a – 19 = 6

⇒ a = 19 + 6 = 25
